Lower Slaughter

Riverside cottages and an easy walk between the Slaughters
Tiny riverside village with honey-stone cottages, footbridges and an easy countryside walk to Upper Slaughter and Bourton-on-the-Water.
Why visit Lower Slaughter?
Lower Slaughter is one of those Cotswold villages where the setting is the attraction. The River Eye runs through the middle beside honey-stone cottages, small footbridges and quiet lanes, creating a scene that feels more intimate than nearby Bourton-on-the-Water.
Walk it rather than rush it
The village is tiny, so there is little point arriving with a long checklist. The best visit is usually built around a walk: follow the river, wander the lanes, then continue towards Upper Slaughter or across the countryside towards Bourton-on-the-Water.
Food and a longer stop
The Slaughters Country Inn gives visitors a reason to linger over lunch or drinks beside the river, while The Slaughters Manor House adds a more polished hotel and dining option nearby. If you are staying locally, the village becomes especially attractive once the busiest daytime period has passed.
When to go
Lower Slaughter can feel completely different early in the morning, towards evening or outside peak summer weekends. Because the village is so small, even a modest increase in visitors changes the atmosphere quickly.
Who it suits
It is ideal for couples, photographers and walkers who are happy with a beautiful hour or two rather than a packed day of attractions. Families can enjoy the riverside setting too, but if you need lots of activities on the doorstep, nearby Bourton is the easier base.
