Wotton is a good place to start and finish a proper half-day walk: you can leave the town’s Jubilee Clock, climb out past fields and return through its streets with a café or pub in sight. The Cotswolds National Landscape’s signed circular uses part of the Cotswold Way, taking in woodland tracks, rolling parkland and views from the edge.
This is five miles, with three to four hours suggested by the route publisher. It is not a gentle, level village stroll. Expect stiles, uneven ground and steep sections, and take the official map rather than relying on a few waymarks. After rain, the descent can be slippery.
Make the most of it
Start beneath the Jubilee Clock at Long Street and Market Street. The official directions include a possible detour towards Newark Park; decide whether you have time before committing to it. On your return, the route passes Wotton’s parish church and leads back into the town centre, where you can find a proper lunch.
