Location: Cotswold Way, Birdlip, Gloucestershire
Birdlip is a useful access point for the Cotswold Way as it follows the limestone escarpment above the Severn Vale. This is walking country rather than an attraction with an entrance: the appeal is the shift between wooded slopes, open viewpoints and the villages on the ridge.
The official trail divides the route into Birdlip–Leckhampton (9km) and Painswick–Birdlip (13.9km). Those are point-to-point distances, so arrange a return journey or use an accurately mapped circular route if you only have a morning. Barrow Wake, just north of Birdlip, is a familiar viewpoint, but nearby roadworks and path changes around the A417 make it particularly important to check the current National Trail diversions before you travel.
Wear shoes that cope with uneven, muddy ground and carry the route offline; phone signal and waymarks should not be your only navigation. The longer Cotswold Way guide gives the wider trail context.
