Visit website

Slimbridge is a proper wetland day out, not just a short path beside a pond. The WWT centre sits by the Severn Estuary, where its network of hides lets you watch birds without disturbing them. In winter, swans, geese and other wildfowl gather in large numbers; at other times the reserve has different rewards, from spring migration to summer dragonflies.

Where to start

Pick up the current sightings information when you arrive and choose a few hides accordingly. The South Lake Discovery Hide has large windows and is an easy introduction if you are bringing children or are new to birdwatching. For a wider view, head towards the Estuary Tower; check on-site notices for temporary access changes. Talks, canoe trips and seasonal Wild Safaris can add another layer, though some require separate tickets or depend on weather.

Practical details

Much of the centre has level, hard-surfaced paths and several accessible hides, making it a useful nature visit for mixed walking abilities. Allow a few hours rather than trying to see every hide. The centre charges admission and does not allow pet dogs, apart from trained assistance dogs. Book online if you want the advance-ticket saving, and check the day’s closing and activity times before travelling.
