Puzzlewood

Explore mossy gorges and winding paths at Puzzlewood; allow 60–90 minutes and expect more than 200 uneven steps.
Opening hours
2026: opens 10am; daily from late March to October, with seasonal last-entry times; weekends and Mondays in November; closed December–February. Weather closures possible. Check the official calendar before travel.
Location: Puzzlewood, Perrygrove Road, Coleford, Gloucestershire GL16 8QB
Puzzlewood is an ancient Forest of Dean woodland that seems to fold in on itself: moss-covered rock, twisted trees, little bridges and paths that repeatedly disappear around a corner. The marked route covers roughly a mile and a half. Children can follow a Roman-coin treasure hunt, while adults can simply take their time with the landscape.
Know the terrain
This is not a level woodland stroll. There are more than 200 narrow, uneven steps, often slippery after rain, and the operator advises allowing 60–90 minutes. Pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility aids cannot safely use the woodland paths. Wear grippy footwear and stay on the marked paths, both for safety and to protect the site.
Before you arrive
Opening days change with the season: the 2026 calendar shows daily opening from late March, weekends and Mondays in November, then a winter closure. Pre-booking is advised in July and August. Pet dogs are not admitted, although identified assistance dogs are permitted. There are picnic benches outside the woods, but picnics are not allowed among the paths. Check the day’s weather and opening notice before travelling, as severe conditions can close the site.
