Visit website

The Museum of Gloucester is the place to start if you want the city beneath the streets, not just the cathedral above them. Its archaeological collection includes Roman tombstones and the Birdlip Mirror, while the Gloucester Tables Set shows a different sort of everyday history: it is the oldest complete backgammon set in the world.

Look for the city’s layers

Use the galleries to piece together the Roman settlement and the later city, then step back outside to recognise the streets you have just read about. Temporary exhibitions and family activities add reasons to return. The museum’s programme also includes quieter sessions and object-handling events, so check what is on for the day you want.
