Visit website

Maugersbury is close enough to Stow-on-the-Wold to make a useful escape from the town’s busy centre. A local circular route drops towards Lower Swell, crosses the River Dikler valley and returns through Maugersbury before climbing back to Stow.

What the route offers

The appeal is the change of pace: market-town streets give way to pasture, lanes and wider views. Cotswolds Tourism describes a circuit of around five miles. Treat that as a planning figure rather than a promise of exact timing; fields and wet ground can slow you down.

Plan for proper countryside

This is a walk with gates, uneven paths and sections that may be muddy after rain. Wear footwear with grip and carry a map or downloaded route. Follow waymarks and public-rights-of-way signs rather than cutting across fields or private drives.

Start and finish

Parking in Stow’s square is time-limited. Consider using the Maugersbury Road car park and check current charges and restrictions. The route can be shortened only if you have a clear map; do not assume every path junction returns directly to town.

Pair it with

Make time for St Edward’s Church or the Market Cross after the walk. For a longer day, compare it with the Stow to the Slaughters walk.
