Leckhampton Hill & Devil’s Chimney

Escarpment walking above Cheltenham, with far-reaching views, wildlife and traces of the hill’s quarrying past.
Opening hours
Open access, generally from dawn to dusk. Check local access, conditions and any seasonal restrictions before travelling.
Location: Leckhampton Hill, south of Cheltenham; access from Daisybank Road or Hartley Lane
Leckhampton Hill gives a Cheltenham break a change of scale: streets give way to open views, grassland and woodland paths. Come for the landscape, and allow time to notice the remains of the quarrying industry as well as the view.
Choose a route for your group
There are several paths and access points, so decide on your start and turnaround before setting out. The council lists parking at Daisybank Road and Hartley Lane. This entry is an introduction to the area, rather than a turn-by-turn route to the Devil’s Chimney; use a current map for your chosen walk.
Terrain and access
Routes vary considerably. The council identifies a three-kilometre wheelchair-suitable walk, but that does not make every hill path accessible. Check the specific route and current surface conditions before travelling. Choose footwear with grip and leave space in the plan for a shorter outing if conditions deteriorate.
Walking with a dog
Galloway cattle graze the common. The council asks visitors to keep dogs under tight control and provides a live grazing map. Check it before you choose your route, respect signs and leave animals plenty of room.
Make a day of it
Pair one walk with a relaxed return to town, rather than trying to cover several hills. Our walking weekend near Cheltenham offers a broader stay idea.
