Corinium Museum

Cirencester’s essential rainy-day stop, with an outstanding collection of Roman mosaics and local archaeology in the centre of town.
Opening hours
Mon–Sat 10am–4pm; Sun 2pm–4pm. Check the official site before travelling.
Location: Corinium Museum, Park Street, Cirencester, GL7 2BX
Why we like it
Corinium Museum is the obvious place to understand why Cirencester matters. The town was Roman Corinium, and the museum turns that history into something much more tangible through mosaics, sculpture, everyday objects and archaeology from the surrounding area.
It is compact enough to fit comfortably into a morning or afternoon rather than swallowing a whole day, which makes it easy to combine with the Market Place, lunch and a wander through Cirencester Park.
Good for families and wet weather
This is one of Cirencester’s most dependable family and rainy-day options. The displays give children plenty to look at without requiring hours of museum stamina, while adults interested in Roman Britain could easily stay longer.
Our tip
Use it near the start of a Cirencester visit. Once you have seen the Roman material, the amphitheatre and the rest of the town make far more sense.
What makes it worthwhile
Corinium Museum gives the surrounding area a stronger sense of identity, whether its focus is local history, design, art or the people who shaped the town. A few well-chosen objects often explain more than a quick sweep of every room.
Planning notes
Allow 45–90 minutes and check current exhibitions, volunteer opening days and ticket arrangements. Pair it with a nearby café, independent shop or short walk so the visit has a natural next step.
