Visit website

Chedworth Roman Villa is one of the most rewarding Roman sites in Britain because the archaeology is inseparable from the landscape. The remains sit in a wooded valley where springs once supplied a large villa complex, and the surviving mosaics, bath houses, hypocausts and water shrine show how much comfort and craft went into Roman country life.

What to see

Begin in the conservation building, where mosaics and fragile surfaces are protected while remaining close to their original rooms. Continue to the museum in the Victorian lodge for jewellery, tools and household objects, then follow the path through the West Range and bath-house rooms. The interpretation makes the site readable even if you are new to Roman history.

Make it part of a day

Chedworth is a natural companion to Northleach’s heritage trail and The Old Prison, both useful for lunch or a second indoor stop. Walkers can join the Monarch’s Way, while families can check the calendar for archaeology activities and seasonal trails.

Plan the visit

The access road is narrow and mostly single track, with limited phone signal. Surfaces are uneven and there are steps between some buildings. Dogs are not allowed except assistance dogs. Allow two to three hours for the villa, museum, café and a short valley walk, and book ahead on busy event days.
