Broadway

Broadway

Wide honey-stone High Street, Broadway Tower and polished north Cotswold charm

A polished north Cotswold village for independent shops, restaurants, walking, Arts & Crafts history and one of the region's best viewpoints.

THE GUIDE

Broadway is one of those Cotswold villages that manages to be polished and picturesque without feeling like there is nothing to do once you have admired the buildings. Its broad, tree-lined High Street is packed with independent shops, cafés, hotels and restaurants, while walks climb quickly into the surrounding hills towards one of the region's best-known viewpoints.

Start on the High Street

The village centre is made for a slow wander. Honey-coloured buildings line the unusually wide High Street and village green, with enough shops and food stops to fill a relaxed morning. Broadway has a stronger retail and dining scene than many smaller villages, so it works particularly well if not everyone in your group wants to spend the whole day walking.

Walk up to Broadway Tower

Broadway Tower stands above the village at 1,024 feet and is one of the classic north Cotswold viewpoints. You can drive closer, but walking up from the village makes the tower feel like a destination rather than a quick photo stop. On a clear day, the views are the reason to make the climb.

Arts, design and history

Broadway's connection with artists and the Arts and Crafts movement gives it more cultural depth than its postcard appearance suggests. Broadway Museum & Art Gallery explores the village's history and creative connections, while the Gordon Russell Design Museum tells the story of the influential furniture designer and the workshops that operated here.

Stay rather than day-trip

Broadway is popular, particularly in summer and around Christmas, but it becomes noticeably calmer outside day-trip hours. Staying overnight means you can enjoy the village in the evening and start a walk before the busiest part of the day.

Who Broadway suits

Choose Broadway for a first Cotswold break, a couples weekend, good food, browsing independent shops and easy access to walks. It also works well as a north Cotswold base, with Chipping Campden, Snowshill and Stow-on-the-Wold all natural additions to the trip.
